E. A. Mares author's photo

A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, E. A. "Tony" Mares and his wife, the writer Carolyn Meyer, now live and write there. Mares has published extensively in English and Spanish as a poet, translator, essayist, playwright, fiction writer, journalist and historian. His poetry and fiction have been published nationally and internationally in Frank, Prairie Schooner, Blue Mesa Review, Solo, Blanco Movil, New Mexico Poetry Renaissance, La Confluencia, Ceremony of Brotherhood, and many other publications. He is the author of The Unicorn Poem (San Marcos Press), The Unicorn Poem & Flowers and Songs of Sorrow (West End Press), and There Are Four Wounds, Miguel (University of North Texas Press). One of Mares' plays, "Lola's Last Dance," was published in David Richard Jones' anthology New Mexico Plays (University of New Mexico Press, 1989). During the1970s and '80s, he toured his one act play, "I Returned and Saw Under the Sun: Padre Martínez of Taos" throughout the Southwest. The play was published under this title by the University of New Mexico Press in 1989.

After completing a doctorate in European history at the University of New Mexico in 1973, Mares taught history, Spanish, and American literature at Colorado College, the University of New Mexico, the University of Arkansas, New Mexico Highlands University, the University of North Texas, and elsewhere. Currently, he is at work on a memoir about his role in the historical reinterpretation of Padre Antonio José Martínez of Taos, a collection of short stories, and a collaborative social science book with Tomás Atencio and Miguel Montiel that addresses significant Chicano issues.
