Frances Hatfield author's photo

Frances Hatfield was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in western Louisiana and east Texas. She studied philosophy and creative writing at the University of Dallas. In 1974, Hatfield moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she learned textile arts and studied poetry, Gurdjieff, and Native American culture and myth. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of California at Santa Cruz, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in psychology and an independent major entitled Mythic Enactment. There she studied poetry with Lucille Clifton and won the University of California's Poet Laureate Award. Hatfield earned a masters degree in counseling psychology in 1996 and a doctorate in East-West Psychology in 2000 from the California Institute of Integral Studies.

She maintains a private practice in depth psychotherapy, and is an advanced candidate in analytic training at the C.G. Jung Institute in San Francisco. She studies Integral Yoga, shamanism, Qi Gong, Taoism, and Sufi mysticism. After a decade-long hiatus, she returned to writing poetry in 2008. She lives in Santa Cruz, but dreams of New Mexico.

Rudiments of Flight is her first book of poems.
